Ponemon Institute's Latest Figures - 29th March 2011

The Ponemon Institute have published findings of the fourth annual study, UK Cost of a Data Breach. This in depth study - based on the actual data breach experiences of 38 UK companies from 13 different industry sectors – highlights that the average data breach incident cost UK organisations £1.9 million or £71 per record, an increase of 13 percent on 2009, and 18 percent on 2008.

Hostile attacks are the most expensive data breaches for UK organisations. The 2010 study found that malicious or criminal attacks accounted for 29 percent of all data breaches, increasing from 22 percent over 2009.

The study also shows how organizations with the best information protection practices in place can lower their potential data breach losses.
